If you see your brother standing by the road
With a heavy load from the seeds he's sowed
And if you see your sister falling by the way
Just stop and say, you're going the wrong way
You got to try a little kindness
Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
Don't walk around the down and out
Lend a helping hand instead of doubt
And the kindness that you show every day
Will help someone along their way
You got to try a little kindness
Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
You got to try a little kindness
Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you'll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets

Not convinced that the kindness expands happiness?
If you're not yet convinced that the statement on the previous page - When I am kind, I feel good - is indeed true for you, then why not test its validity for yourself. Here's how:
- Today and tomorrow, deliberately and consciously start sowing seeds of kindness by simply doing or saying kind things.
- Immediately after each act of kindness notice how you feel.
- Did you feel good? If not, did you at least feel less bad than you did before?
- Did you feel that you liked yourself more, were somewhat pleased with yourself?
- Did you notice whether the other person seemed to experience some sort of better feeling? If so, did noticing this add further to your own sense of feeling good?
- Did you find that the better feeling lasted a while longer than the act of kindness itself?
If your answer to any one of the above four questions is Yes, then this aphorism will work for you when used as an affirmation.
Use the Try A Little Kindness lyrics to help you get started
- Look your partner in the eye and smile at him or her in a kindly way.
- At a checkout till smile at the cashier, and thank them for the job they're doing.
- In a public washroom, smile at the cleaner and thank him or her for keeping the place so clean and fresh for everyone. Perhaps even give a tip if that would be appropriate in your society.
- Offer to help a family member carry their shopping bags into the house.
- In the home, offer to do something that another member of the family usually does - just to give them a break from it. It could be washing the dishes, taking out the refuse, making the bed, locking the garage door or any of the typical household activities that are part of life.
- When you next make a phonecall to a stranger, deliberately and consciously be friendly to the person at the other end, without being gushy or syrupy. Just be nice, recognising them as another human being who also wants to be happy.
- Extend the practice beyond human beings too: to pets and plants. See if you feel good inside.
Can you think of more opportunities to show some kindness? Do you have some personal experiences about being kind that you'd like to share with others? (See the red heading at the end of this page.)
Just shine your light for everyone to see

Deeper application of this aphorism
In the course in Self-Alignment© I will show you how you can enliven within you a kindness consciousness that will automatically nudge you to try a little kindness. This means that when an opportunity arises to choose kindness over anything less, your 'conscience' will be more discernable and you will more consciously be able to make a deliberate choice for more happiness.
Likewise, when you are not being so kind, or are about to be not so kind, your inner voice will be heard more clearly and more promptly so that you can immediately take the higher road to happiness. You will more easily follow your bliss. And in this context indeed, happiness is a choice.
In the meantime, you can start immediately and use the Try A Little Kindness lyrics and melody to remind youto use the kindness practice described above. Make the decision to be kind to all whenever the opportunity arises.
And as a daily reminder at the start of each day, try this little tip. Change the start-up greeting on your cellphone so that each time you switch it on it reminds you to try a little kindness with these four simple words:
Be kind to all
