There Is One Desire That
Triggers All Other Desires
There is one desire that every human being has, whether they know it or not, and that is the desire for peace and happiness.
All actions and all other desires are subordinate to that one desire which is the one that makes life on earth evolve.
Are desires the cause of unhappiness?
It is traditional in some philosophies to believe that desires are the cause of unhappiness, and that we should therefore learn to be without desire. In that way we will attain happiness.
Sorry, but I disagree with that line of thinking.
My perspective is that desire is the very mechanism that energizes a human being into fulfilling his/her life purpose - which is also the
purpose of Life itself
- and that is the expansion of happiness.
Desires are not the problem
Desire itself is not the cause of dissatisfaction and unhappiness. The problem lies the inability of the individual to fulfil his/her desires. And the reason why many people experience this is that they have desires that are out of alignment with those of their Higher Self. So they set themselves up on a path of struggle, resistance and non-fulfilment. And it is that which results in unhappiness.
Self-Alignment is the way to more happiness
On the other hand, when a desire is 'right' for a particular individual, then the universe conspires to support the fulfilment of that desire. This is the principle behind the now popularly talked-about
'Law of Attraction'
That one desire for happiness is Life's very mechanism for causing human beings to identify their preferences, which in turn sparks subordinate desires aimed at increasing happiness. That in turn expands the universe through the creation of that which is desired.
Without that one desire, we would be stagnant; we wouldn't evolve, and Life would not expand itself. We are, indeed, Life's instrument in this whole process of becoming more and of expanding joy, bliss, happiness.
So, from my perspective, the philosophy of trying to be without desires represents an incomplete understanding of the true nature and purpose of desires.
Towards the fulfilment of all desires
The true state of enlightenment is when the individual ego-self's consciousness is fully aligned with universal consciousness. We can move towards that state of Self-Alignment by means of the daily practice of an effective meditation technique. (I use my own method called Conscious Mental Rest (CMR) which my experience shows me is as effective as the best-of-breed effortless meditation techniques.)
As one moves towards Self-Alignment the desires of the personality progressively become more closely aligned with the impulses of the Inner Self. The personality, mind and physical body then become the instruments in making the Self's (Soul's) impulses of desire become manifest.
Notes from the Universe
Every day I used to receive in my e-mail IN box a 'Note From The Universe'. I think this note below spells out beautifully what I have been trying to say above.
Here's the thing, Gavin. Admission into time and space requires a belief in limits: a belief that both time and space are real; that you can therefore have and have-not; that love can be lost or found; and that you are what your physical senses show you and no more.
These illusions immediately lead you to believe that you are incomplete. Yet, far from indicating you are flawed, they reveal your brilliance by filling you with desire, igniting your emotions, fuelling your passions, and catapulting you out into the world where journeys are begun, connections are made, and dreams come true... only to be replaced by new dreams as your divine sense of incompleteness persists.
This is by design, Gavin. Feeling incomplete does not make you so. It's how legends are born, giants are made, and history is written. It's why you're here. To ever so briefly escape your true identity as you live with an unquenchable thirst that will lead into adventures of grandeur, discovery, and a realization that love is all there is.
Your trusty accomplice,
