Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
The purpose of creation is the expansion of happiness, and this purpose is fulfilled through the process of cosmic evolution. The significance and purpose of individual life is the same as that of cosmic life. The difference is one of scale.
Comment: Interestingly, in this one of several of Maharishi's happiness quotes he clarifies what he means by ‘life’, to include all of life, from the first impulse for creation itself. So, taking Aristotle’s quote deeper, here we see that the very purpose of creation is the expansion of happiness. If we human beings are part of that purpose, as well as instruments of the expansion of the experience, and also have the innate ability to experience happiness ourselves, then we should no doubt be experiencing it regularly ourselves, if not permanently.
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
Comment: I can’t argue with this happiness quote! I could add, though, that loving what you do requires that you first become happy, and from that ‘place’ your feelings will guide you to what you will enjoy doing. Do only that which feels good, really good, and right – based on your feelings, not on your intellect, and not necessarily on what others have told you. In that way you will be fulfilling your own life purpose to be happy, and you’ll be doing what expands your happiness through your daily activity.

Happiness belongs to the self-sufficient.
Comment: By 'self-sufficient' in this quote on happiness, I believe that Aristotle is not promoting the idea of being totally self-sufficient in regard to practical day to day living, but rather to rely on the Self, the inner You, that unshakeable silence within. By imbibing in that silence regularly one comes to own it in one’s awareness. Functioning from that state of awareness, one comes to know that the Self is one’s anchor and source of happiness, and one actually lives it.
If only we'd stop trying to be happy we'd have a pretty good time.
Comment: Excellently put! I can identify well with this happiness quotation. This trying habit of mankind certainly has a role in life, at a practical level of doing and achieving things. But one thing trying cannot bring to us is true, lasting happiness. In a process I call Conscious Mental Rest too, trying is ‘verboten’. CMR is a 100% natural process, and even the act of trying not to try will disallow the process to proceed innocently and effortlessly.
