Ralph Waldo Emerson Nothing can bring you happiness but yourself.Comment: Spot on! The so-called 'happiness' of being in love, of having a special person in one's life, is never forever, unless one is first truly happy within oneself, of oneself. If we're not first a happy being, we look to someone else or something else to bring us our happiness, and we therefore give away our power to be happy. And so our happiness now depends on external factors, which are always changing. We may then look to a new car, or a promotion, or a successful career to bring us happiness. But many a 'successful' celebrity, with as much money and fame as they could want, has grown old and died an unhappy person. Happiness comes from within, and that is where we need to nurture it - in our own self.
Democritus Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul.Comment: Even before the birth of Christ, this Greek philosopher was hitting then nail on the head. My comments here would pretty much be a repeat of the comments I made on the Emerson quote above. Of note, though: Democritus talks here about where the 'feeling' of happiness dwells.

Ludwig Wittgenstein The world of those who are happy is different from the world of those who are not.Comment: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has said that "perception depends on the perceiver". In other words, the 'reality' of the world as perceived by a happy person is a different reality from that perceived by someone who is not happy. When we feel grumpy, then we take that grumpy vibration with us into the world and our interactions with and perceptions of others are seen through 'grumpy' spectacles. But if we go out in a happy frame of mind, feel light and exhilarated, then we 'see' the world around us through 'rose-tinted' spectacles. The world is as we see it. And we see it according to our present state of being and experience. The solution: First become happy and then enjoy a better experience of the world.
The key to becoming happier
is to be moving consciously towards Self-alignment.
Victor Hugo The supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved - loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.Comment: I'm not too sure what Hugo means by "the supreme happiness". But I can say that from my own personal experiences of bliss, which came pretty close to "supreme happiness", that it had absolutely nothing to do with my feeling loved by another.
Picasso Everything exists in limited quantity - especially happiness.Comment: No comment is needed.
Anonymous Happiness is enhanced by others but does not depend upon others.Comment: I agree with this quote. Much UNhappiness comes from the belief that our own happiness depends on others, or on other situations. Remove the other, and we become unhappy. But if we are already happy, another can certainly enhance our experience, especially if our own happiness is already overflowing towards the others.
