I think gratitude is a feeling of being grateful for and not necessarily to someone or thing. Having an attitude of gratitude simply means to me that I am glad to see the color purple or a child's smile, I am happy not to be suffering from some terrible disease, I am amazed when I gaze into the sky and a meteor shower is going by and yes I deeply appreciate these things also.

I can lift myself up out depression when I realize how lucky or blessed or loved or whatever I choose to call it (gratitude that no matter how bad it is I still have things and people and my Supreme Being and myself) to remember that I was feeling gratitude before, during and
after any events in life and I will continue to if that is my will.

I am grateful you put the question out there as it has been fun to contemplate.
