Famous Quotations On Happiness

(Happiness Quotes - Page 3)

Here are some famous quotations from famous people. I have included my own comments below each of these quotes on happiness.

It is interesting how many people through the ages have created writings or given speeches that have been recorded to give us a wonderful source of life quotations that can inspire generation upon generation.

Many of these happiness sayings have come to serve as a useful resource for public speakers who wish to include some famous quotations in their speeches.

Anne Frank
The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.

Comment: I did not go through the experiences of Anne Frank during World War 2, but I respect her ability to maintain such an attitude to life as reflected in her diary. In the last part of this happiness quote from her writings she expresses in a more religious way what both Aristotle and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi have expressed when they speak about the purpose of life. And, she hints at Leo Tolstoy’s injunction to just ‘be’ – in her way, to be quiet, of settled mind and close to the simple beauty of nature. It’s interesting how through the ages those people with words of wisdom have indicated the importance of being still.

Jesus Christ
Be still, and know that I am God.

Comment: I love this quote from the Bible. It is brief and yet virtually every word and word-combination has its own power: -Be: Per the Aristotle quote: If you want to be happy, be. -Still: Being of still mind is, in fact, to be – that is, without mental chatter, without thought, just in silence.-Know: Not 'believe', or wish for, or understand, or have faith, but just know. -I: The Self. Self-awareness-Am: Again, be; the 'I AM' consciousness; Beingness-God: All that is; beyond intellectual understanding; Is-ness; universal consciousness; “I am That, Thou art That; All this (in its essential nature) is That.”

Benjamin Disraeli

Benjamin Disraeli
Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.

Comment: Hmmmm; I’m not quite sure just what ole Benjamin was meaning here with this happiness quote of his, so I can’t really comment about it with much relevance. Certainly, action can bring temporary happiness, and happiness does not really require ‘action’, as far as I’m concerned. By just ‘being’ one can experience sublime happiness. But I do feel that for happiness to expand outwards and multiply, per the purpose of life and the purpose of creation, then this is brought about first by thought and then by action. That seems to be how it works in the physical world of time, space and activity.

Buddha
Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to yourself and others.

Comment: Sorry, but I don’t fully grasp what the Buddha is getting at here. I know He is highly revered by His followers, but the way I see it, happiness comes first. Then it wants to expand through you, and in so doing you spontaneously involve others and take your work and words to incorporate other people too. And that expands your happiness further, as well as the happiness of the cosmos. But to say that ‘happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to yourself and others’ doesn’t sit quite right with me. Perhaps He meant ‘more happiness comes …’? Then that would make sense to me. Maybe I'm missing something here. Feel free to submit your own views on this one.
